Shweta Krishnamurthy (aka Xylo Aria) is a singer, producer, entrepreneur and true visionary. Born in India and residing in Australia, Xylo brings her global perspective into her music and everything she does. In 2017 Xylo took the decision to produce her own music, after which she released her first set of self produced tracks. These tracks got significant coverage on Australian publications including Tonedeaf, Pilerats and Australian Music Scene as well as radio coverage on numerous radio stations such as PBS and Triple R.
Reflecting on the hardships she faced as a female musician working with a choice of only male producers, and also the challenges of learning to self produce in an area of music which was heavily male dominated, planted the seed for the online education platform MPW - Music Production for Women. Determined to break down the barriers that she faced in approaching music tech while making the space more inviting for women, she created and launched the MPW platform in early 2019. Since then, Xylo has been named a Top 50 East London Innovator of 2020 and been included on the SheSaidSo top 100 Alt Power list. MPW in the meantime has grown significantly, taught in excess of 6000 students from over 120 countries and been included in university studies, featured in numerous podcasts and included in various articles on the topic around the world.
Simon Moro is a music producer, sound engineer and mixer of over 20+ years, working with independent artists and household names for Sony, Mushroom, ABC, Netflix and Eurovision. His work has achieved ARIA #1s and been ARIA nominated.
He also has a strong interest in supporting aspiring producers in his role as presenter and sponsor for festivals including Live ’n Local and Melbourne Music Week. In 2018, Simon was invited to the Industry Advisory Board at one of Australia’s leading sound engineering universities, after his initial decade long year career in lecturing at RMIT and JMC prior to the last decade as a full time producer. He has an ongoing commitment to the importance of education as part of the solution to any challenge.
Simon was a founding committee lead for Start Up Victoria, which now has over 60,000 community members and across that time founded two music industry startups including Indie Drums for drum replacing samples with over 40,000 downloads and Trackbits, the first to market app for time-stamped mix comments.
He believes it’s critical that professionals are able to be differentiated from enthusiasts in the market and if given the opportunity to contribute as a board member of MPEG, he brings a strong set of proposals for industry advocacy including;
1. Ensuring business viability and sustainability for freelancers and studios by:
- Creating strong differentiation between enthusiasts and professionals
- Advocating to government bodies to create incentives to use local vs international professionals - And incentives for international artists to choose Australian producers and engineers
- Promoting Australian producers and sound engineers to overseas labels and artists
- Encouraging Australian record labels to employ local studios and talent
2. Build real benefits for MPEG members
- Leveraging his extensive contact network across pro audio wholesalers and retailers to create pro audio gear benefits for all members
- Leveraging his comprehensive network of training providers to create new student memberships and build the authority of the MPEG brand
- Preparing fundraising submissions for government grants and philanthropic donations
- Contributing his skills in website development, SEO and marketing to the MPEG brand
3. Superannuation Payments Revision
Policy advocacy to the Australian Tax Office for a revision of the Super Guarantee (SGC) to ensure it is more compatible with the business operations of freelance music producers. The current policy requires all music producers, sound engineers and musicians to receive super payments from their clients and pay super to their contractors, and manage all the admin, rather than being recognised as any other type of sole-trader business, and managing their own super.
4. Education and up-skilling
- Ensuring that educators are accountable for keeping up with a changing industry that is largely freelance vs employed by creating and promoting new methods of education
- Providing space for MPEG members interested in sharing their experience and educating others to run masterclasses, workshops, funded mentoring programs and industry short courses.
- Creating unique opportunities for professionals to share expertise and up-skill
Simon’s skills not only as a music producer but also as a software developer, business owner and educator make him uniquely positioned to provide value at the intersection of music, technology and business advocacy.
Importantly Simon is someone who genuinely listens, then rolls up his sleeves and takes action. With that in mind, he would welcome hearing from any MPEG members who are interested in voting for him as a board member and keen to discuss both these and their own ideas for MPEG.
